Drums and Tuned Percussion : - Iain W. Symon
| Age | Over 50! |
| Biography | Iain began training at school in the 1950s, then played piano, clarinet and saxophone in orchestras and dance bands over 20 years on a semi-professional basis. He was initiated into brass bands when his family joined Tayport Instrumental Band, where he took up percussion and became in succession, Treasurer, Secretary and Chairman. When most of the family moved onto bands in the Championship Section, he joined them, initially with Lochgelly Band (under the baton of George Bennet), then at Alva. Meantime, he served as Treasurer of the Fife Charities Band Association. He and wife Margaret returned to TIB when George became their conductor, then later (via Livingston Brass) moved to Dundee Instrumental Band, in the fond hope that it would be less energetic than in the upper competition sections. Iain retired from his lifetime post of University lecturer (Dundee and St Andrews) and Chartered Accountant in 2007. Sadly, in that year also, his wife Margaret who had played Bass and Baritone in the same bands, died, and was very kindly recognised by Frank Culross (Conductor of TIB) with his dedicated brass band march "Gala Parade" |
